White Beech Table
Gmelina leichardtii, commonly known as Australian White Beech, is an Australian native rainforest tree that is now very uncommon in the wild due to heavy logging throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. These were once towering giants of the forest. We will never again see trees of the scale the early loggers encountered.
We can appreciate creations by Kevin from ARK&C Handcrafted Woodwork
The tree that was this table was felled in the 1890s. Based on the size and character of the timber left behind, it was believed to be exceptionally old, Kevin believes maybe 1,500 years in the making.
In 1982, Kevin salvaged what the loggers had deemed “unusable pieces” from the Tooloom Range.
Kevin didn’t see unusable…
He fell in love with every curve, every line and from the moment the idea formed in the Kevin’s imagination, it took just one month for that vision to become the beautiful coffee table you see here.
This is a piece that carries the weight of trees no longer here but the lightness of being.
I always say Kevin’s pieces are functional artworks, conversation starters and quiet reminder of what once was.
Most of Kevin’s pieces come from Australian Native Rainforest trees. All are made from salvaged timber. Making use of what is no longer here!
Size
750cm wide and biggest point and 550cm high
