Brian is back at Trevallan, and this time he’s turning his attention to dahlias.

With their extraordinary range of colours, shapes and flower forms, dahlias can look incredibly impressive in the garden, but understanding what is happening beneath the soil is just as important as enjoying what appears above it.

Drawing on decades of gardening experience, Brian will take you through the dahlia growing cycle from tuber to flower, explaining what these plants need at each stage and sharing the practical techniques that can make the difference between a struggling plant and months of spectacular blooms.

Throughout the workshop you’ll discover:

• How dahlias grow and understanding the role of the tuber.

• The different types, sizes and flower forms of dahlias.

• How to select healthy tubers and what to look for when buying them.

• When and how to plant dahlias successfully.

• Choosing the right position and preparing your soil before planting.

• Watering, feeding and caring for plants as they establish.

• Common dahlia pests and problems and how to recognise them.

• How to lift, divide and store tubers, as well as when they may be able to remain in the garden.

• How to propagate and multiply your favourite dahlias for future seasons.

Brian will also talk about growing dahlias in our local climate and how seasonal conditions can influence planting, flowering and care.

And of course, there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions along the way, so if you have a dahlia that refuses to flower, a tuber you’re unsure about or simply want to understand how people manage to grow those enormous, spectacular blooms, bring your questions with you.
